Packaging

Face Mask 101

With an ever growing landscape of masks out there, we’ll help you wrap your head around all the options and figure out what’s right for you. We’ve tested over 40 masks to find the best ones in each category (see the comparison grid for a head to head look). Since we’ll all be wearing more masks these days, might as well be comfy.

Full Panel
This is the most common mask shape with lots of decoration options including all over printing.

Center Seam
The seam adds an angle to the mask that contours well to the face. Note, the design won’t line up over the seam.

Pleated
The fabric has pleats to give more room within the mask which creates a looser fit. Decoration options are limited.

Single Use
An inexpensive option with raw edges and no sewing, however we don’t think you should get this style.

Neck Gaiters
A different shape and style that can also wear well around the neck when not in use.

STRAPS

Ear Loop Options

The strap has a big impact on the comfort and adjustability of a mask. Pick and choose based on your needs.

Single Loop
A single loop that goes over the ear. Having a soft stretchy elastic is key for fit.

Adjustable Strap
The straps can be pulled tighter or loosened for a wide fit range.

Adjustable Slide
A soft rubber slide allows the ear loops to be adjusted for the right fit.

Ties
Tie the straps to the size you want (over the ear or head)

Ear Saver
Adjust the fit while also helping with ear comfort.

Over the Head
A good option if you’re wearing the mask all day.

FIT
Stretch Factor
A large factor in fit and comfort is the material used for the ear loops. Many masks actually don’t use a true elastic, but rather the same fabric as the mask panel itself (think of a t-shirt material… there is some stretch of course, but not nearly the same level as elastic). This reduces the stretch, which inhibits comfort and ends up fitting fewer faces.

SEWING
Gathered Edges (shirring)
How the mask is sewn together makes a difference. For the best fit, the elastic is sewn to the fabric in a gathered (shirred) style. This gives the mask more stretch while also hugging the face and contours for a better fit (which is why you see this in swimsuits).

FIT

SIZING

Will the Mask Fit?

Face it, people and therefore faces come in many different sizes. Like most apparel items, masks have several ways to deal with fitting as many people as possible. As you saw above, how the mask is shaped and constructed makes a difference. Here are a few other ways:

Adjustable
A mask with an adjustable strap or slide can extend the fit range without dealing with different mask sizes.

Multiple Sizes
Some masks come in 2 or 3 sizes. This adds a bit of logistics, but can be overcome with our pre-order and group order tool to collect sizes.

OSFM
A majority of masks come as one size fits most (OFSM), which does make it easier to order and distribute, but also will inevitably leave some on the fringes wanting. However a mask with elastic ear loops and a good stretch can work for most people.

Add More Filtering

If you want an extra layer of protection, we can add in a separate filter that protects from the particulate matter at 2.5 microns (that’s most forms of bacteria, allergens, smoke and pollution).

Option 1
Some masks have a filter pocket built in. Simply slide it in.

Option 2
The filter can freely sit inside any mask.

Design Tips

All over print
Full Color – Digital Print

These are printed before the mask is made, which allows for the edge to edge printing. Take advantage of that.
The mask will contour when worn, so use patterns and shapes that work well with that.
Support your people with style, not huge logos or ads.

All Over Print – Center Seam
Full Color – Digital Print

For masks with a center seam, use a pattern that can split nicely over the seam without needing to line up.
Dots, all-over patterns, and organic shapes are the name of the game, leave stripes and patterns that align for masks without a seam.

Limited imprint area
1-3 color – Screen Print

These are printed after the mask is made and therefore the imprint is limited in size and color.
Organic and circular shapes are more forgiving with this pattern (square shapes can appear visually off).
With the smaller size and color range, keep it simple.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION
WHO Recommendations
The WHO recommends a 3 layer face covering made up of a combination of materials to maximize filtration efficiency and breathability. Our KotisMade Mask (with 3-ply) has been lab tested to meet the WHO requirements.

Maintenance Recommendations
• Only 1 person should wear the mask
• Dirty/wet masks should be changed and not worn for extended periods
• Wash regularly and handle carefully to avoid contaminating other items
• Wash in warm water with soap or with detergent delicately without stretching or wringing the fabric

CAMBRIDGE STUDY
Mask Materials Put to the Test

Researchers at Cambridge University tested a wide range of household materials for cloth face coverings. To measure effectiveness, they shot Bacillus atrophaeus bacteria (0.93-1.25 microns) and Bacteriophage MS virus (0.02 microns ins size) at different household materials.
